Post Master's Certificate Programs
James Madison University's Nursing Department offers four certificate programs:
Nurse Administrator Certificate
This program prepares graduates for roles to ensuring cost effective care by providing oversight and management of unit (or organization) financial resources and improved patient outcomes via strategic management of human and material resources in health organizations. Students complete a total of 500 clinical practicum hours, applying leadership and management principles in a variety of health care settings with an emphasis on the organizational environment. Graduates of the Nurse Administrator program are qualified to take the Nurse Executive certification (formerly Nursing administration certification) exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)
Clinical Nurse Leader Certificate
This program prepares graduates to improve patient care outcomes through effective leadership strategies and to influence health care design by using evidence based strategies to effectively meet patient health needs. Students complete a total of 500 clinical practicum hours, with an emphasis on delivery systems and functions that impact patient safety and quality of care. Graduates of the Clinical Nurse Leader program are qualified to take the certification exam through the Commission on Nurse Certification (CCN)
Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Certificate
This program prepares graduates to synthesize assessment data to diagnose and manage adult/geriatric patient health and illness needs with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention and to effectively serve as a client partner and advocate within the health care delivery system. Students complete clinical practicum hours, applying clinical skills, theories, concepts, issues and research findings to the clinical care of adolescents, adults and/or older adults in a variety of care settings. Graduates of the ANP/GNP program are qualified to take the certification exam through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) http://www.aanpcertification.org or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) http://www.nursecredentialing.org
Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate
This program prepares graduates to synthesize assessment data to diagnose and manage patient and family health and illness needs across the lifespan with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention and to effectively serve as client partners and advocates within the health care delivery system. Students complete clinical practicum hours, applying clinical skills, theories, concepts, issues and research findings to the clinical care of children, adolescents, adults and/or older adults in a variety of care settings. Graduates of the FNP program are qualified to take the certification exam through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) http://www.aanpcertification.org or the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) http://www.nursecredentialing.org
The Post-master’s Certificate Program prepares advanced practice nurses who have already earned a Master’s degree with additional education to practice as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL); Nurse Administrator; or Family, Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. The program is designed to be completed in 4 semesters.
The courses for the nurse practitioner certificates meet the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Competencies in Adult/Gerontological and Family areas as prepared by The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) in partnership with The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). JMU’s Graduate Program is fully accredited by the Center for Credentialing Nursing Education (CCNE).
Completion of the post-MSN certicate program provides eligibility to take the certification examination specific to the program of study. Upon completion of the nurse practitioner certificate program, students are eligible to take the examination through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Completion of the certificate program for the Nurse Administrator prepares students to take the certification examination offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Organization of Nurse Executives. Completion of the CNL post-MSN certificate program prepares graduates to take the certification examination offered by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC).
