Post Master's Certificate: Nurse Practitioner Program Overview

Photo: NP ProgramThe post-master’s Nurse Practitioner Program prepares advanced practice nurses who have already earned a Master’s degree with additional education to practice as a Family,  Adult and/or Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. The program integrates theories and evidence- based practiced for the care of infants, children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

Nurse practitioners, depending on their specialty, care for individuals and families across the lifespan.  James Madison University is uniquely located to provide a program for the rural underserved.

The post master’s Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program ranges from 25-37 credits, depending on previous courses and choice of program. Dual certification option of both adult and gerontological nurse practitioner is available as well as the Family Nurse Practitioner option. The program is designed to be completed in 4 semesters.

The courses meet the Nurse Practitioner Primary Care Competencies in Adult, Family and Gerontological areas as prepared by The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) in partnership with The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). JMU’s Graduate Program is fully accredited by the Center for Credentialing Nursing Education (CCNE).

Outcome objectives for the program are:

The nurse practitioner graduate will demonstrate ability to:

    1. Synthesize assessment data to diagnose and manage patient health and illness needs (NONPF Domain I)
    2. Effectively serve as client partner and advocate within the health care delivery system to meet client needs. (NONPF Domain II; V)
