Giving Opportunities

The JMU Nursing program needs your help! As we continue to expand our MSN and BSN programs, as well as pursue other new nursing educational endeavors, it becomes ever more crucial to remain up-to-date and current with our teaching methods and resources. Your tax-deductible contribution will help us to purchase or develop these resources:

  • Stipends for student nurse expenses such as uniforms, stethoscopes, fees for mandatory conventions and conferences, research project materials
  • Scholarships for deserving students who otherwise cannot afford to pursue a nursing degree or return to school for graduate education
  • New or replacement simulation equipment and supplies, particularly as we “grow” our SimFamily
  • Updated videotapes, CDs, multimedia self-paced learning modules
  • Funds to support faculty development, attendance at out of area conferences and workshops
  • Funding for an endowed chair in nursing

Farrell Endowed Scholarship for Nursing
Dr. Francis (JMU '82) and Mary Carter Farrell (JMU '84) established the endowed Farrell Scholarship in 2004 in honor of their parents, Frank and Eva Farrell. Mrs. Eva Farrell, a registered nurse, was widowed at age 42 with seven children. Following graduation as a nurse, she did not practice during 20 years as a homemaker. In 1977 she returned to nursing and practiced for 20 years, becoming a supervisor prior to her retirement from Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Dr. Farrell was impressed that the skills, values, and knowledge base his mother received as a young nursing student allowed her to begin a nursing career at 47 years of age. The gift creating this scholarship is made to commemorate the lifetime of service to others in need, providing scholarship support for undergraduate nursing students.

Gloria Jane Hollowell Henley Scholarship
The Gloria Jane Hollowell Henley Memorial Scholarship was established in February, 1983 to award a scholarship to a student enrolled in the School of Nursing. Gloria was born July 27, 1936 in Norfolk, Virginia and while in high school, she was diagnosed with Type I (juvenile) diabetes but was determined that it would not have a negative impact on her life. As a juvenile diabetic, Gloria suffered from a number of complications including amputations ultimately dying of heart failure on July 11, 1982, just short of her 46th birthday. Recalling his mother's love for the nurses who had cared for her over the years, the family established a scholarship for a nursing student.
