Information for Transfer and Second Degree Students
Thank you for your interest in James Madison University’s Nursing Program. Included are some helpful directions and tips for a successful transition.
Admission to the Nursing Program is separate from admission to the university and requires a supplemental nursing program application. Admission decisions are made one year in advance. If you transfer enrolling in a spring semester (for example, Spring 2010), we can consider you for admission to the program during the next academic year (2010-2011). If you transfer to JMU enrolling in a fall semester (for example, Fall 2010), we can consider you for admission to the program the following academic year (2011-2012). Admission to the Nursing program is competitive. Admission is based on all student qualifications but GPA and Prerequisite Math and Sciences are strong indicators.
Admission Steps
Transfer Students:
- Review the JMU Transfer Advising Website
- Complete your application to JMU.
- After you are accepted to JMU, the Admissions Office will schedule you for Transfer Orientation. Attend the Transfer Orientation in December for Spring transfers, and June for August transfers. At that time, the Registrar’s Office will analyze your transcripts and a nursing advisor/counselor will meet with you to plan your course of study, and advise when you can be considered for admission to the nursing program.
- Complete and submit the Nursing Supplemental Application right before beginning your first semester at JMU or upon change of major. Be sure to submit a separate copy of all college transcripts (unofficial is OK) directly to the nursing department. Once you meet Stage II Criteria with a JMU GPA your GPA at other universities/colleges will be added into a weighted GPA.
- Review our Department of Nursing (BSN) admission stages/criteria.
- During your first semester get to know your academic advisor and schedule regular advising appointments with him/her.
Second Degree Students:
- Review the JMU Transfer Advising Website. Complete and submit the Nursing Supplemental Application. Be sure to submit a separate copy of all college transcripts (unofficial is OK) directly to the nursing department. If you have taken courses at JMU, your JMU GPA and your transfer GPA must meet minimum GPA requirements.
- Contact the Nursing Office (540-568-6314) to make an appointment to meet with a JMU nursing advisor/counselor. The counselor will analyze your transcripts from your first degree, and advise when you can be considered for admission to the nursing program.
- Review our Department of Nursing (BSN) admission stages/criteria.
- After you are admitted to the Nursing Program, complete your application to JMU as a second degree student.
